What is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition characterized by inflammation, dryness, itching, and a rash. It can affect people of all ages, but it often starts in childhood and may persist into adulthood. Eczema appears as patches of red, dry, and itchy skin that can be scaly or crusty. The affected areas may develop small bumps or blisters, and scratching can lead to skin thickening or discoloration. Common sites of eczema include the face, hands, arms, behind the knees, and in the folds of the elbows. The severity and appearance of eczema can vary among individuals. An experienced eczema doctor can help assess your eczema and provide treatment options for relief.

More About Eczema Treatment

What are the Causes of Eczema?

The exact causes of eczema, or atopic dermatitis, are not fully understood. However, a combination of genetic and environmental factors is believed to play a role. People with a family history of eczema, asthma, or allergies are more prone to develop it. Various triggers can exacerbate eczema symptoms, including allergens like dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and certain foods. Irritants like harsh soaps, detergents, fragrances, and chemicals can also contribute. Other factors like dry skin, immune system dysfunction, and abnormalities in the skin barrier function may contribute to the development of eczema. Additionally, factors like stress, hormonal changes, and climate can influence its occurrence.

What Are the Treatments for Eczema?

The treatment of eczema aims to alleviate symptoms, reduce inflammation, and prevent flare-ups. A multifaceted approach is often employed. Moisturization is key, with regular application of emollients to keep the skin hydrated. Topical corticosteroids are commonly prescribed to reduce inflammation during flare-ups. Nonsteroidal topical medications like calcineurin inhibitors may be recommended for long-term management. Antihistamines can provide relief from itching, while wet dressings or bandages can soothe and protect affected areas. In severe cases, systemic medications like oral corticosteroids or immunosuppressants may be prescribed. Avoiding triggers, practicing good skincare, and managing stress are essential components of eczema management. Regular follow-up visits with a dermatologist help monitor progress and adjust treatment plans as needed.

Dr. Lamb is amazing. I was referred to her eight years ago by my pediatrician. I just looked through my email and found the first email I sent her after we met. She has always gone out of her way to be informative and sensitive when discussing my family's dermatological needs (all four of us see her). In addition, she spends enough time with you to thoroughly examine and discuss any questions. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Lamb.
