What is a Wart?

Warts are benign skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They appear as raised bumps on the skin and can vary in size, shape, and location. Warts are contagious and can be transmitted through direct contact or by touching contaminated surfaces. Common types of warts include common warts, plantar warts, flat warts, and genital warts. They can occur on the hands, feet, face, or genital area. Warts are typically harmless but can be bothersome or unsightly. Certain factors, such as a weakened immune system or frequent exposure to warm and moist environments, may increase the risk of developing warts.

More About Wart Removal

What are the Causes of Warts?

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common viral infection. Different strains of HPV can cause various types of warts. The virus enters the skin through small cuts or breaks, infecting the cells and causing them to multiply rapidly. Factors that increase the risk of developing warts include direct contact with the virus through skin-to-skin contact or sharing personal items with an infected individual. People with weakened immune systems are also more susceptible to warts. Warm and moist environments, such as public swimming pools or locker rooms, can facilitate the transmission of HPV. Good hygiene practices and avoiding direct contact with warts can help prevent their spread.

What Are Wart Removal Treatments?

Wart removal treatments aim to eliminate warts and restore the skin’s appearance. Various methods are available depending on the type, size, and location of the wart. Common treatment options include cryotherapy, where liquid nitrogen freezes the wart; salicylic acid-based medications for self-application; laser therapy, which destroys the wart tissue with a focused laser beam; and surgical excision for larger or stubborn warts. Additionally, chemical treatments, such as cantharidin or trichloroacetic acid, may be used by healthcare professionals. It’s important to note that self-treatment at home may have limitations, and seeking medical advice is recommended for proper evaluation and suitable treatment options.

Dr. Lamb is amazing. I was referred to her eight years ago by my pediatrician. I just looked through my email and found the first email I sent her after we met. She has always gone out of her way to be informative and sensitive when discussing my family's dermatological needs (all four of us see her). In addition, she spends enough time with you to thoroughly examine and discuss any questions. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Lamb.
