Keloid Scars: Keloid Removal Treatments

What Are Keloids?

Keloids are abnormal, raised scars that develop as a result of an overgrowth of collagen during the wound healing process. Unlike normal scars, keloids extend beyond the boundaries of the original injury and can be larger, thicker, and more pronounced. They typically have a smooth, shiny appearance and can range in color from pink to red or dark brown. Keloids can occur anywhere on the body and are more common in areas prone to tension or movement, such as the chest, shoulders, earlobes, and upper back. Although keloids are harmless, they can be cosmetically bothersome and may cause itching, discomfort, or tenderness.

Keloid Causes

The exact causes of keloid scars are not fully understood, but several factors contribute to their formation. One primary factor is an exaggerated response to skin injury. Keloids often occur after trauma, such as surgery, acne, burns, piercings, or even minor cuts. Genetic predisposition plays a significant role, as keloids tend to run in families. Ethnicity also influences susceptibility, with individuals of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent being more prone to keloid formation. Hormonal imbalances, such as during pregnancy, may contribute as well. Additionally, certain areas of the body, particularly those with high tension or constant movement, are more prone to developing keloids.

Keloid Treatments

Various treatments are available for keloid scars, aiming to reduce their appearance and symptoms. One common approach is surgical removal, where the keloid is excised, but there is a risk of recurrence. Cryotherapy involves freezing the scar tissue, which can help flatten and reduce its size. Intralesional corticosteroid injections are administered directly into the keloid to decrease inflammation and promote flattening. Laser therapy is another option, utilizing targeted light energy to fade redness and improve the texture of the scar. Pressure dressings, silicone gel sheets, and radiation therapy may also be employed. Combination therapies and personalized approaches are often used to achieve optimal results in keloid scar treatment.
