Total Body Skin Cancer Screenings

What is a Skin Cancer Screening?

Total body skin cancer screenings are a comprehensive examination performed by a dermatologist to assess the entire surface of the skin for signs of skin cancer. The screening involves a thorough visual inspection of the skin, including hard-to-see areas like the scalp, between the toes, and behind the ears. The dermatologist examines moles, freckles, and any other skin abnormalities, looking for signs of potential malignancies. The screening aims to detect early-stage skin cancers or precancerous lesions, facilitating prompt diagnosis and treatment. It is especially recommended for individuals with risk factors or a history of skin cancer and provides an opportunity for proactive management of skin health.

What Happens During a Skin Cancer Screening?

During a total body skin cancer screening, you will typically be asked to disrobe and wear a medical gown. The dermatologist will systematically examine your entire body, starting from the scalp down to the soles of your feet. They will carefully inspect your skin, including hard-to-see areas, using a bright light and sometimes a magnifying instrument called a dermatoscope. The dermatologist will evaluate moles, freckles, birthmarks, and any other skin irregularities, looking for signs of potential skin cancer. If any suspicious lesions are identified, the dermatologist may recommend further evaluation, such as a biopsy, to determine if the lesion is cancerous or precancerous.

What Happens if Something is Found During a Skin Cancer Screening?

If something suspicious is found during a skin cancer screening, further steps will be taken to determine the nature of the lesion. The dermatologist may recommend a biopsy, which involves removing a small sample of the abnormal tissue for laboratory analysis. The biopsy helps in confirming the presence of skin cancer and determining its type and stage. Based on the biopsy results, the dermatologist will discuss treatment options and develop a personalized plan. Treatment may involve surgical removal of the cancerous growth, radiation therapy, topical medications, or other targeted therapies. Early detection through screenings increases the chances of successful treatment and improves overall outcomes.
