Rough Skin and Keratosis Pilaris Treatment

What is Rough Skin and Keratosis Pilaris?

Rough skin and Keratosis Pilaris (KP) are common skin conditions that affect many individuals. Rough skin refers to a textural irregularity, usually caused by dryness, environmental factors, or lack of proper skincare. It can manifest as rough patches or bumps on various body parts. KP, on the other hand, is a specific form of rough skin characterized by small, rough, acne-like bumps, often appearing on the upper arms, thighs, buttocks, or face. It occurs due to the buildup of keratin around hair follicles. Although harmless, KP can be bothersome.

Causes & Types of Rough Skin

The causes of rough skin can vary, and several factors contribute to its development. Environmental factors play a significant role, such as exposure to harsh weather conditions, low humidity, or excessive sun exposure, which can deplete moisture and lead to dry, rough skin. Inadequate skincare routines, including improper cleansing or lack of moisturization, can also contribute to roughness. Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, or ichthyosis can cause rough patches or bumps. Lifestyle factors like poor nutrition, dehydration, smoking, or excessive alcohol consumption can negatively impact skin health. Understanding and addressing these underlying causes are crucial for managing and improving rough skin.

Treatments for Rough Skin

Dermatological treatments offer effective solutions for addressing rough skin. Chemical peels involve applying a chemical solution to exfoliate the skin’s outer layer, revealing smoother skin underneath. Microdermabrasion uses tiny crystals to gently remove dead skin cells and improve texture. Laser resurfacing treatments stimulate collagen production, promoting skin renewal and reducing roughness. Dermabrasion involves a rotating brush or diamond-tipped instrument to remove the top layer of skin, revealing a smoother surface. Topical retinoids can help increase cell turnover and improve skin texture. We may also recommend prescription creams or ointments containing ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids or corticosteroids to alleviate rough skin and associated conditions.
